Hospitalfield House
Summer 2003: Hospitalfield House Arbroath, Scotland
How does a contemporary artist respond to historical sites? Hospitalfield House and the objects (or traces found there) provided a particular challenge to this question. Over a three-month period I photographed a range of ‘subjects’ – from the ‘picturesque’ to the banal. The resulting material raised another question: how to produce an artwork for the gallery context, one that conveys to the viewer a similar sense of discovery to that of working on site?
